Your Network Is Not Yet a Pipeline

THE EXPERT SHIFT

Executive Reinvention for Experienced Leaders

Reading time: 3 minutes

“I’m not too worried about finding clients. I have a very good network.”

I hear some version of this surprisingly often.

And when I look at the person sitting across from me, I understand why.

Twenty-five or thirty years in business.
Former colleagues.
Customers.
Suppliers.
CEOs.
Board members.
Recruiters.

Perhaps thousands of LinkedIn connections.
A few of them will become clients.

Perhaps.

But there is one problem.

A network is not yet a pipeline.

Now, let’s get started.

THIS WEEK

Your network was built for your corporate career

Think about how most of those relationships were created.

People knew you as:

CEO of…
Managing Director at…
Division Head for…
Sales Director...

They knew what company you represented.
They knew what you were responsible for.
They knew why you were relevant to them.

Your position did much of the explaining.

Then you leave.

And suddenly that context disappears.

You may still know 500, 1,000 or even 5,000 people.

But how many of them know what they should now call you for?

That is a very different question.

Let’s look at this differently.

THE EXPERT BRIEF

Imagine someone in your network meets a CEO tomorrow who has exactly the problem you could solve.

Would that person think of you?

And if they did, could they explain in one or two sentences why the CEO should speak with you?

If the answer is no, you don’t have a network problem.

You have a positioning problem.

People need to understand:

What do you do?
For whom?
What problem do you solve?

Only then can your network begin to work differently for you.

But there is another step.

You also have to look at your network through a new lens.

Not:
Who do I know?

But:

Who could become a customer?
Who could introduce me to one?
Who understands the market I want to enter?
Who could challenge my assumptions?

And who should I reconnect with now — before I actually need something?

That last question matters.

Because the worst time to discover whether your network can help you is the day after you lose your corporate title.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Many experienced executives underestimate how different business development feels when they become independent.

In corporate life, the company provided much of the system around you.

The brand.
The products.
The pricing.
The infrastructure.
The sales organisation.
The marketing machine.
The customers.

…and let's not forget the instant relevance that came with the title.

When you become independent, you have to create that relevance yourself.

The good news is that you are not starting from zero.

You have spent decades building something extremely valuable:

Trust.

But trust alone does not create a pipeline.

You need to connect that trust with a clear positioning, a relevant offer and a systematic way of executing to create real conversations.

That is when your network starts becoming one of your most powerful business assets.

Not because you know thousands of people.

But because the right people know what you can do for them.

ONE NEXT STEP

Take 15 minutes this week and look at your network differently.

Don’t count contacts.

Identify 20 people.

People who could become potential customers.
People who could introduce you to one.
People who understand the market you want to enter.

Then ask yourself:

If I called them tomorrow, could I clearly explain why my expertise might matter to them now?

If that answer is still difficult, that is exactly where the work begins.

It is also one of the reasons we built the Expert Shift OS around four elements:

Positioning. Offer. Sales. Trust.

Because experience and relationships are enormously valuable.

But to build a business from them, they need a system.

Sometimes one good introduction starts an entirely new chapter.
Experienced leaders deserve another great chapter.

Enjoy a great weekend,
