Not pushing solutions too early.
But understanding the situation, the problem, the implications, and the real need behind the conversation.
That changed how I sold.
And later, how I built my own consulting business.
Because in consulting, your first conversation is everything.
Many executives oversell their background.
Others jump too quickly into solutions.
Others stay so generic that nothing sticks.
The result?
A nice conversation.
But no next step.
A strong client conversation works differently.
Start with their world, not yours.
Diagnose before you prescribe.
Make the cost of inaction visible.
And close with direction, not ambiguity.
That is what turns experience into engagement.
And this matters even more after 50.
At this stage, you are not selling energy.
You are selling judgment.
Your authority no longer comes from a corporate title.
It comes from how clearly you think, how well you listen, and how confidently you structure complexity.
